Introduction
Thank you for using Markdown Reader. This Privacy Policy applies to the Markdown Reader website, browser extension, accounts, subscriptions, and support services (collectively, the "Service"). It explains what information we collect, how we use and protect it, and how you can manage your data.
Markdown Reader follows a local-first principle: local Markdown files you open are processed on your own device and in your browser by default, and are not uploaded to Markdown Reader servers.
Information We Collect
We collect information only to the extent needed to provide the Service, including:
- Account information: When you register, sign in, or reset your password, we process your email address, login status, authentication tokens, and necessary account security information.
- Subscription information: When you purchase or manage Markdown Reader Pro, we receive necessary records from the payment provider, such as subscription status, order ID, product plan, payment time, and refund status. Sensitive payment details such as full card numbers or payment account passwords are handled by the payment provider and are not stored by us.
- Local file content: When you choose a local Markdown file, the extension temporarily reads the file content to render previews, outlines, syntax highlighting, math formulas, diagrams, and related features. The file content is not uploaded to Markdown Reader servers or saved by us.
- User preferences: The Service may use browser storage, such as
localStorage, extension storage, or browser cache, to save theme, layout, rendering options, login status, and similar settings. - Technical and diagnostic information: When you visit the website, sign in, or call service APIs, servers and security systems may record IP address, browser type, device information, request time, and error logs. With your consent, we may also collect anonymous error reports and usage statistics to diagnose issues and improve the experience.
Browser Permissions and Local Processing
The browser extension may request permissions related to file access, page rendering, extension storage, or the current tab. The exact permission scope depends on your browser version, extension store requirements, and the permissions you grant.
- The extension reads relevant content only when you choose a file, enable local file access, or visit a specified resource.
- Local file parsing, Markdown rendering, and common preview features are performed on your device whenever possible.
- If a Markdown file references remote images, styles, scripts, or other online resources, your browser will request those resources from their servers. Those servers may record access data under their own privacy policies.
How We Use Information
- Provide account registration, sign-in, password recovery, subscription recognition, and Pro entitlement checks.
- Process payments, transaction records, subscription cancellation, refunds, and customer support requests.
- Save your preferences so the extension and website provide a consistent experience on later visits.
- Troubleshoot issues and prevent fraud, abuse, unauthorized access, and violations of the Terms of Service.
- Analyze overall website and product usage to improve performance, stability, and feature design.
Third-Party Services
To provide website, payment, analytics, and support capabilities, the Service may use third-party services. We try to limit sharing to the information necessary for each specific service.
- Paddle: Used to process Pro subscriptions, payments, taxes, invoices, cancellations, and refunds. Payment information is handled under Paddle's own terms and privacy policy.
- GitHub: Used to receive issue reports, public discussions, and support requests. Content you submit on GitHub may be public.
- Google Analytics and Baidu Tongji: The production website may use these analytics tools to understand page visits and performance. These services may set cookies or process device and visit data.
- Browsers and extension stores: Browsers or extension stores such as Chrome, Edge, and Firefox may process installation, update, crash, and review-related data under their own policies.
- External resources referenced by your documents: Remote images, links, and other resources are selected by you, and the related requests are governed by the third-party websites' own policies.
Information Sharing
We do not sell your personal information. We do not share your personal information with third parties except in the following cases:
- Sharing is necessary to provide payment, subscription, login, security, analytics, or support services;
- You explicitly authorize or ask us to share it;
- Sharing is required to comply with applicable law, court orders, regulatory requirements, or to protect the legitimate rights and interests of users, the public, and Markdown Reader.
Data Retention
- Account information is generally retained while your account exists. If you request account deletion, we will delete or anonymize information that is no longer needed within a reasonable period.
- Subscription, transaction, refund, and tax records may be retained for longer periods as required for payment, accounting, risk control, and legal purposes.
- Local Markdown file content is not uploaded or saved, so we cannot restore, export, or delete that content from our servers.
- Server logs and diagnostic information are retained for the period needed for security, troubleshooting, and compliance, then deleted or anonymized.
Your Rights and Choices
- You can disable or uninstall the extension in your browser, or clear extension storage, cache, and website cookies.
- You can cancel your Pro subscription. After cancellation, Pro benefits end at the close of the current billing period unless the subscription page or payment provider states otherwise.
- You can contact us to request access to, correction of, or deletion of account-related information, or to withdraw consent for non-essential data processing.
- Some requests may require identity verification. We may need to retain certain necessary records for legal, tax, payment dispute, security, risk control, or anti-fraud reasons.
Children's Privacy
The Service is not directed to children below the legal age. If you believe a minor has provided personal information to us without guardian consent, please contact us and we will take appropriate action after verification.
International Processing
The service providers and infrastructure we use may be located outside your country or region. By using the Service, you understand that relevant information may be processed and stored in different regions in accordance with applicable law.
Security
We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect account, subscription, and service data, including access controls, encrypted transmission, data minimization, and security reviews. However, no internet service can be absolutely secure, and you should also protect your account, email, and devices.
Privacy Policy Updates
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the date on this page, and, where appropriate, by notice on the website, in the extension, or through other reasonable means. Continued use of the Service means you understand the updated policy.
